tw: homophobia, transphobia, rape
Tropfest, for those who don’t know, is the world’s biggest short film festival. IT started at a bar in Sydney, and now they have entrants from all over the world and a special edition during the Tribeca Film Festival. It’s kind of a big deal.
So the winner of the latest edition, that just finished up in Sydney? BAMBOOZLED. It’s probably the most ridiculously awful piece of homophobic trash you’ll see this side of the right-wing.
It starts with a man introducing himself to a fellow, “Peter”, he recognizes at a bus stop. The initial joke here is that it’s revealed that the man who just introduced himself to Peter was once a woman that he dated. The whole thing is awkward, and completely not how interactions with trans*men play out in real life, but it gets worse.
From there, they go and have a shitty montage in a pub, complete with getting very very drunk. Like no consent drunk. Peter goes back to the guy’s place and they sleep with each other. Peter does the whole wake up later regret thing, and then the man Peter just slept with says, “Don’t say anything as you’ve just been BAMBOOZLED!” A TV host runs through the door with camera crew, saying that the guy Peter slept with was an actor, while his real ex-girlfriend comes through the door spouting some nonsense about revenge, and it fades to black with everyone laughing at him. Nude.
So yeah tl;dr the plight of transphobic people is used a punchline to coerce a man into gay sex and rape him so that we can watch and laugh. I AM NOT KIDDING.
And the kicker: the signature item for this edition of Tropfest was “CHANGE”
I can shrug off awful. Hell, most Tropfest entries are pretty terrible. The whole event is honestly an excuse for Australians to go have a picnic. But this is legitimately a worrying piece of “cinema”. This guy is about to get a thousand and one networks into the industry. Is this the standard we accept now?
If you can: contact Tropfest on every means necessary. Twitter, facebook, everything. Start a fucking war. Bamboozled deserves to be stripped of its prize. It’s is disgusting film-making that should not have been screened, let alone awarded.
Revolting beyond comprehension, how can we seemingly get so far with transgender, gay and rape awareness and still manage to vote in a cisgendered straight man’s misrepresentation and comedic devaluation of the stigma surrounding these issues?! I cannot for the life of me fathom why this idiotic film got into the top 16, let alone won. This is disappointing beyond comprehension.
Oh 2013, exasperatingly devastating from beginning to end.
